Loughborough Dynamo secured their first silverware of the season when they beat a young Leicester City side 1-0 in the final of the Westerby Cup Winners Cup.

The Westerby Cup Winner's Cup is a one off game between the winners of the previous season’s Westerby Cup - the Leicestershire & Rutland County FA’s highest County Cup competition - and Leicester City.

The Evo-Stik NPL First Division South side’s win on Monday night denied City their third successive victory in the competition, the closely fought contest settled by a penalty from Matt Langham on 15 minutes.

As expected it was City who set the early pace and Jacob Blyth blazed an effort over the bar. City pressed forward but Dynamo defended diligently and looked dangerous on the counter attack.

On 15 minutes Dave Blekinsopp played the ball out wide to Louis Hamilton who raced into the area only to be upended by Josh Robinson. Matt Langham converted the resulting spot kick.

Although the play went from end to end, goal chances were few. Dynamo keeper Kahil Mann-Kler broke City hearts on 24 minutes when a cross from Michael Cain was met with a goal bound header by Tom Hooper, Mann-Kler pulling off a stunning save to deny the forward.

Late in the half a City attack ended when Joe Dodd pulled his shot wide of the target.

In the second half City thought they'd equalised when George Taft headed home from a corner, only to see the effort ruled out as the ball had gone out of play when crossed in.

City continued to press but Dynamo’s defence, superbly marshalled by Alvin Jarvis, refused to buckle and City failed to get a shot in on Dynamo’s goal.

In the final quarter of the game, with City pushing forward for an equaliser, Dynamo had a couple of promising counter attacks but the final ball did not match the approach play and the chances fizzled out.

The remaining minutes were a nervy affair but Dynamo held onto their slender lead with the celebrations kicking off as the referee blew the final whistle.
