Market Drayton Town have revealed how a late call from Manchester United’s reserve team boss Warren Joyce set up tonight’s friendly at Greenfields.
The Gingerbread Men scored twice in a 6-2 defeat and officials at the Evo-Stik First Division South club told the Shropshire Star that they’d received a phone call from United reserve team boss Warren Joyce last night [Tuesday] asking if they could give the Premier League giants a game at short notice and if possible today.
Joyce’s call capped a thrilling 24 hours for the Shropshire club coming on the same day they entertained Stoke City, last night's friendly ending in a 2-1 victory for the visitors.
"It’s massive news for the club,” said director of football Andy Cooke, the former Shrewsbury striker who runs first team affairs along with manager and ex-Telford United boss Jimmy Mullen.
"To have Manchester United coming to town is fantastic and everyone is looking forward to it, especially the players because it’s a great opportunity for them."
Town's Craig Ryan scored from the penalty spot on 56 minutes and Tom Rogers found the net on 80 minutes in front of crowd of 370 at the PK Arena.
Frederico Macheda and Jesse Lingard scored twice for the Reds with David Petrucci and Ryan Tunniclife grabbing a goal apeice for United.
